So, to help make things easier for you, Bairro Alto is one of four of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Lisbon to explore and stay. So, let us find out what these two districts have to offer.
Bairro Alto Lisbon History
Bairro Alto is a historic neighborhood with a rich and diverse history. The name Bairro Alto translates to “Upper District.”
The history of the district dates back to the 16th century. During this period, Lisbon rapidly expanded as a maritime and trading hub. Bairro Alto was initially designed as an upper-class residential area with narrow streets and charming architecture.
In 1755, a devastating earthquake, followed by a tsunami and fires, struck Lisbon and caused significant destruction. Bairro Alto was not spared, and many buildings were damaged or destroyed.
The reconstruction efforts played a crucial role in shaping the neighborhood’s layout and architectural style. Over the centuries, Bairro Alto underwent several transformations.
In the 19th century, it started to develop a reputation as a bohemian quarter, attracting artists, writers, and intellectuals. The narrow streets became filled with small taverns, Fado houses, and lively social spaces, contributing to the neighborhood’s unique character.
Today, the Lisbon district is a vibrant hub with bars, alternative shops, and restaurants. It remains a must-visit destination when visiting Lisbon.

Chiado and Bairro Alto Lisbon Confusion
While many people talk about Chiado and Bairro Alto in one sentence on the web, they are two different places; they both form a symphony in classical and bohemian styles.
The upper side is Bairro Alto, with its narrow cobbled streets and many secrets to explore. It is a gay-friendly yet vibrant hub. Here you find restaurants, nightclubs, and bars.
Then you find Chiado at the lower end, shouting elegance with busy picturesque streets, shops, packed terraces, and street art. You will notice that Lisbon has several eras coexisting in the areas.
Each building tells a story, and you can find many art galleries, including the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Chiado. Furthermore, if you love performing arts, you can find some iconic theaters to explore.

In the city center, Praça LuÃs de Camões, you find the famous Bairro Alto Hotel. It is filled with sophistication and charm.

Still, I recommend Park and O Bom o Mau e o Vilão for the best drinks.
For ice cream lovers, Baixa offers the best mouthwatering ice cream shops, and if you prefer cake, you can find some great pastry shops in the region.

São Roque Church
Address: Largo Trindade Coelho, 1200-470 Lisboa, Portugal
The church is one of the few buildings that survived the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The baroque and mannerist architecture was left without a scratch. The church, even today, still catches anyone’s attention when passing by. It was built in the 16th century.

Enjoy Bica

A Brasileira in Chiado is a must-visit with its arty ceiling, and it serves the best strong coffee in Lisbon. The coffee shop has a long history and is one of 14 European cafes you must visit, according to The Telegraph. Outside, you will see the famous Fernando Pessoa bronze statue for a worthy selfie.
Enjoy The View From Topo Chiado

Enjoy the view from this rooftop bar that serves the best cocktails. Here, you can enjoy all-day dining or brunch for €17 while enjoying the panoramic view. You can get a perfect shot of the Elevador de Santa Justa. Also, visit the place at night for a different scene.
Eat Warm Pastel de Natas
Visit Manteigaria, and when you hear the bell, you know you will get a warm batch of these Portuguese pastries. You can pay around €1 each, and remember to sprinkle some cinnamon on them. Ride The Lisbon Funiculars
To reach Bairro Alto, you can use the funiculars around the city to avoid strenuous climbs. There are two you can use: the Ascensor da Bica and the Ascensor da Glória.
Both are connected to the Barrio Alto district; you need not ride them but at least go and admire them and take a selfie with these yellow cars. Invest in a Zapping Ticket or the Navegante Card to save money traveling with one.
Visit Retrosaria Pomar
Address: R. Maria Andrade 50A, 1170-217 Lisboa, Portugal
Retrosaria Pomar is where you must be to learn more about Lisbon’s traditional crafts. The wool shop started as an online shop and has a new home in Bairro Alto. You can join in the workshops held every month.
You can learn to speak Portuguese and knit. Once you master the language, check out the old food market Mercado de OfÃcios, converted into a training space for arts and crafts.
Do a Culinary Tour
Bairro Alto is the culinary spot where you can find several Portuguese tascas to enjoy traditional dishes like codfish and petiscos.
You will find international restaurants like Tantura, where you can enjoy falafel and hummus.
For Korean-style food, head to Grill de Korea; for pizzas, nothing beats Valdo Gattie. Or enjoy a sandwich on the go by Miolo, who also serves sweet treats.

Check out Local Street Artists
In Lisbon, you can find street art everywhere, including Bairro Alto. Walking around the neighborhood, you discover art pieces from international and Portuguese artists. From giant sculptures on walls to tiny black stencils. On billboards and walls, you can even see stickers with Yes Life is Good in Lisbon.
Soak Up The Amazing Views
Head to a vantage point in Barrio Alto called Miradouro de São Pedro de Alc’ntara. From here you can enjoy the view of the river and streets. You can even see the São Jorge castle rising above the Alfama terracotta rooftops. While there, bring a bottle of wine or grab a beverage at the kiosk nearby.
Enjoy Bar-Hopping in Barrio Alto
The district is known for some of the best bars at night. While these bars are small, the crowds easily spill onto the street and hop from one bar to another. I recommend you head to Loucos e Sonhadores or Páginas Tantas, a jazz spot. Then, head to the rooftop bars in the district during summer, like Park and Insolito.
How to Reach Barrio Alto
To reach the neighborhood effortlessly, opt for tram number 28 combined with the Santa Justa Lift or the Ascensor da Glória, situated in Praça dos Restauradores. Choosing the Santa Justa Lift will give you a view of the four blocks of houses that tragically succumbed to a fire on August 25, 1988.
