Can you imagine walking in Lisbon, taking a turn on a side street, and ending up in the most beautiful garden with a pool and a view of Lisbon? That’s Jardim do Torel.
I remember the first time I saw Jardim do Torel. It was by coincidence as I was walking with some friends and my partner.
All of a sudden, we saw a pool, and as we walked further, we saw this hidden gem of a viewpoint of Avenida da Liberdade and Baixa.
When it’s warm enough, people bathe in the pool, and there is also a small cozy café where you can get the best iced coffee I’ve ever tried with soy milk. It’s incredible.
Jardim Torel originated in the 18th century and was once a private property. It opened up to the public in the 1960s.
It’s named after the original property owner, who lived in one of the mansions nearby. You can still see it today, and it’s close by.
This hilltop was home to aristocrats, but many of their houses fell apart. Two houses were renovated and turned into the famous Torel Palace Hotel.
The entire park(Jardim) is divided into two levels. The top level is with grass and shadowed by the trees, and the second level is with the café I mentioned and the viewpoint of Lisbon.
You have to experience this if you’re in the area; it’s a 5-minute walk from Avenida da Liberdade.
How to Get to Jardim do Torel
You can easily walk here, and it’s super close to Avenida da Liberdade, as it’s just behind. It might feel like a steep climb, but it’s well worth it.
If you don’t feel like walking, you can also take Lisbon’s oldest funicular: the Lavra funicular. It’s located right next to my favorite coffee cafe in Lisbon on the side street to Avenida da Liberdade.
When you get to the top with the Funicular, walk to the left, and then you’ll get to Jardim do Torel.
Tip: You can get the Navegante Card or Lisboa card for discounts on all funiculars in Lisbon.
Attractions Near Jardim do Torel
There is a super beautiful church nearby called Igreja da Pena, at Calçada de Santana.
You can also, at the bottom of the funicular, get incredible coffee at Fabrica Coffee Roasters or see the theater on a side street from Avenida da Liberdade.
The pearl of this area is the little-visited garden that you just visited, so spend some time here and relax with something to drink from the café.

Wrap-Up
This garden opened up back in the 19th century for the public eye, and I’m so happy that it did because it’s beautiful.
It’s a little walk from Liberdade Avenue, and you get the most beautiful view of the city in the park.
Promise me you’ll try the iced coffee at the café if you like coffee. It’s incredible.
Lisbon is packed with gardens, so if you want to see even more gardens, here is a full list.
