September is the perfect time to visit Lisbon because the temperature is still lovely and warm, while the number of tourists has vastly decreased compared to July and August.
I love to visit Costa da Caparica in September, because it’s still warm enough, but strolling around Chiado is also one of my favorite things to do.
So, if you’re visiting Lisbon in September, here’s what’s happening and what you should add to your to-do list.
Weather in Lisbon in September
Lisbon September | Weather |
Average During Day | 18°C (64°F) |
Highest Day | 26°C (79°F) |
Lowest Night | 17°C (63°F) |
Water Temperature | 19°C (66°F) |
Rain | 26mm |
Daily Sunshine | 9 hours |
September is a funny month because one day it can be 26 degrees Celsius, and you’re lying on the beach enjoying it, only for the next day to be rainy and 18 degrees Celsius.
This also requires that you pack a good variety of clothing, but I always wear shorts and a T-shirt (sometimes long pants) and never freeze.
September continues to be one of my favorite times during the year to be in Lisbon.
8 Things to Do In September in Lisbon
While summer and hours of daylight are slowly shortening, it doesn’t mean the beach season is over.
Going to the beach is one thing; you can also get spooked at a hotel or listen to some great music. Just get your pen ready to plan your stay.
1. Get Spooked at The MotelX
If you’re into horror or getting spooked, then this unforgettable experience at MotelX is where you need to go.
MotelX is a film festival celebrating horror movies, and it’s usually mid-September.
Check their website to ensure you’re in Lisbon during the festival; they often have some pre-events as well.
2. Stroll around the city; Chiado
Even though it might sound touristy, Chiado is just my favorite place to explore Lisbon.
In Chiado, you get everything from bustling squares to cobbled streets and panoramic views in multiple places.
On top of that, you get incredible restaurants and, of course, stores, which is also the main thing.
You can really feel the history of the city when you walk through it and experience the spectacular views, and the bonus is that September is not peak season.
3. Visit Belem
Belem is a big part of UNESCO World Heritage and there are a lot of historical things to see in Belem.
I’ve made a walking tour if you want to visit Belem to create an amazing experience for you.
But the things I recommend seeing are:
- Belem Tower
- Jeronimos Monastery
- Tropical Botanical Garden
- Discoveries Monument (Padrão dos Descobrimentos)
If you have lots of time for more, then here are 11 things to see in Belem on a self-guided walking tour.
4. Food Tour
I’m a big foodie myself, and when I’m in Lisbon, I love to snack, so I can try a lot of different foods throughout the day.
If you’re a foodie, I strongly recommend you take a day to walk around the city and try many small delicacies.
My recommendations are:
- Pastel de Nata at Manteigaria
- Coffee at Fabrica Coffee Roasters
- Bifana at As Bifanas do Afonso (Bring cash)
- Macaroons, chocolate, and ice cream at Arcadia Chocolate Shop
- Pastel de Bachalau at A Licorista
- Piri-Piri chicken at Bonjardim (It’s spicy)
5. Go to the beach
This might sound a bit off, but visiting the beach in September?
But don’t get me wrong; it’s almost the ideal time to go to the beach.
You have nice temperatures of up to 26 degrees Celsius, and often much warmer, while you don’t have as many tourists.
I recommend you visit Costa da Caparica, my favorite beach, or Cascais to enjoy a beach day and explore traditional restaurants around the coastline.
6. Free Walking Tour
With GetYourGuide, you can book some great free walking tours to explore the city on foot. These tours offer an educational experience with knowledgeable guides who take you through the streets to give you the best insights.
If you want to explore on your own, I’ve made a guide for this as well, with 3 different walking tours that will allow you to see a little bit of Lisbon’s rich history.

7. Visit the Oceanarium
The Oceanarium in Lisbon is one of the largest in the world, and it’s just magical once you visit.
I’ve been there once with my partner, and I was amazed by the huge aquarium in the middle of the building. I could stand there and look at the many species for hours. It’s mesmerizing.
8. Pilar 7 Bridge Experience
Conclude your trip to Lisbon with a memorable visit to the Pilar 7 Bridge Experience. This one-of-a-kind interactive center provides an exceptional perspective of the 25 de Abril Bridge.
You will be transported via an elevator to an 80-meter-high panoramic viewing point, from which you can experience breathtaking views of the city and the Tagus River.
As part of this experience, you can also enjoy a fascinating virtual reality tour to explore inaccessible sections of the bridge. Pretty cool, right?
