Miradouro das Portas do Sol Viewpoint in Lisbon

Miradouro das Portas do Sol

Miradouro das Portas do Sol is a beautiful viewpoint in Lisbon in the hilly Alfama district.

It’s a beautiful area with a view of Alfama and the Tagus River, with benches, cafés, and a restaurant where you can get something to eat.

It’s a massive balcony, and if you just want to get some photos of the viewpoint, you don’t have to sit down at the café or restaurant; just walk to the edge and get your photos.

The viewpoint is located perfectly between São Jorge Castle and the Lisbon Cathedral, so you can make a day out of it by visiting these three spots and more viewpoints.

When you look out at the buildings, you’ll see a lot of ancient buildings like the National Pantheon. All of these buildings survived the 1755 earthquake, which is why Alfama is the oldest part of Lisbon.

You’ll also notice a newer building, which is the cruise terminal. If you take a cruise that stops in Lisbon, this is where it stops.

The name of the viewpoint means “The Gate of the Sun” because it’s one of the best places to watch the sunrise.

At the viewpoint, you have the statue of St. Vincent, which holds the Lisbon symbol, and the Azurara Palace, which is now an art museum.

The Lisbon symbol is a boat with two ravens on it. You get a feeling that the statue is welcoming you as you arrive at the viewpoint.

I love visiting these viewpoints, and if you walk to it, you can reward yourself with a drink or dessert at the top at either the kiosk or the restaurant.

There is also a tiny tunnel nearby with beautiful art decorations on the walls inside, another perfect place for a photo.

How to Get to Miradouro das Portas do Sol

You can walk to the viewpoint, which takes around 15 minutes from Baixa, which is quite close. Just be aware it’s an uphill walk.

I do recommend walking as you get to see another part of the city as well, and then it’s just a beautiful walk through the narrow cobblestone streets.

Alternatively, you can take either tram 12 or the famous Tram 28 to get to the top.

Lastly, you can take the 737 bus at Praça da Figueira, which stops just a few meters away from the viewpoint.

Just in the corner of the viewpoint near the white church, you have access to another beautiful viewpoint, Miradouro de Santa Luzia.

I highly recommend you visit Miradouro de Santa Luzia as well, which offers a beautiful view of the city.

You also have the Decorative Arts Museum and the Lisbon Cathedral.

If that’s not enough, you have the famous ruins of the Teatro Romano de Lisboa.

Wrap-Up

I highly recommend you visit this viewpoint and combine it with visiting the Lisbon Cathedral and the other viewpoint, Santa Luzia.

You get to see so much in a little maze of streets, and then it’s just such a beautiful sight for the eyes. Perfect for your Instagram.

As it’s only a 15-minute walk from the city center, it’s super easy to get here, and it’s a beautiful walk, but you can also take the tram and still see the beauty of Alfama.

This is just one of the many beautiful viewpoints you find around Lisbon, and there are officially seven hills, but many more viewpoints.
