It’s a place where tradition meets modernity, like many other Portuguese cities, offering a little something for everyone.
History of Campo de Ourique
Campo de Ourique has a rich history dating back to the 19th century.
Initially developed as a residential area for the middle class, it has since evolved into a bustling neighborhood filled with cafes, shops, and cultural landmarks.
From the Restauradores Square to Marquis Of Pombal Square (Praรงa Marquรชs de Pombal), including Avenida da Liberdade.
The area retains its old-world charm with tree-lined streets, beautiful architecture, and a welcoming atmosphere.
The main road through the district is Rua Ferreira Borges. It is not only beautiful but also a quick way to travel to the Amoreiras district.
The nearby Tagus and Sado rivers are also stunning and provide this district with a wonderful view.
Overall, Campo de Ourique is a charming neighborhood in Lisbon, Portugal’s capital city, known for its vibrant streets, historical charm, and strong sense of community.
What to See and Do in Campo de Ourique
You can see and do many things in Campo de Ourique. I highly recommend just wandering around the neighborhood on foot and taking in some amazing architecture.
If you want something specific to go out and do, there are a couple of popular activities that I can highly recommend.
Amoreiras 360ยบ
A great place to start your visit is with a panoramic view of Lisbon from Amoreiras 360ยบ, an observation deck offering stunning city views.
You can’t miss the three large, 21st-century towers above everything else. Although not everyone likes them, they house the Amoreiras shopping center and several offices and apartments.
I lived in Amoreiras, so the Amoreiras Shopping Center was my go-to for almost everything.
If you go through the shopping center, you can access the observation deck at the top.
This spot is great for getting your bearings and appreciating the city’s layout, including views of the Tagus River and the nearby Sado River.
The cost is very reasonable at โฌ5, and you can buy tickets online or directly from the shopping center information desk.
Make sure that you check the website for their hours, as they vary seasonally.
Aqueduto das รguas Livres
The Aqueduto das รguas Livres is an impressive aqueduct that once supplied water to Lisbon. It’s a marvel of engineering and a testament to the city’s historical ingenuity.
Built around 1731, it used to provide water to many of the city, but now it is just part of the water museum.
You can marvel at the large arches and expansive distance (58km!) from the ground, or you can walk on top of the arches for a small fee of โฌ4.
If you are interested, you can buy tickets through the water museum. The Lisboa Card should give you a significant discount.

Campo de Ourique Market
A must-visit is the Campo de Ourique Market.
Not only is the covered, traditional market a great way to see some amazing 20th-century architecture, but this vibrant market offers a variety of fresh produce, gourmet foods, a fantastic selection of fresh fish, and local delicacies.
It’s a fantastic spot to experience the local culinary scene.
Traditional neighborhood markets like Campo de Ourique Market are perfect for immersing yourself in the local lifestyle.
Outside the market portion, I highly recommend checking out the food hall. The food hall is in the same building as the market, but more towards the exterior, and has a variety of traditional foods.
Casa Fernando Pessoa
If you are a literature enthusiast, you will appreciate visiting Casa Fernando Pessoa, the former home of the famous Portuguese poet.
The museum offers insights into his life and works, providing a deep connection to Portugal’s literary heritage.
You can even see portraits of the poet painted by Almada Negreiros and Jรบlio Pomar.
The home itself stands out in the already vibrant neighborhood. Located on Rua Coelho Da Rocha, the big white building is often brightly decorated.
It’s usually open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 AM to 6 PM. Tickets go for around โฌ6, but you can get in for free with a Lisboa card.
Prazeres Cemetery
First built in the 17th century, the Prazeres Cemetery is not just a resting place but also an open-air museum. It houses beautiful mausoleums and offers a peaceful atmosphere for a reflective stroll.
Although it might sound quite morbid, it’s one of the best places to visit in the city center. Not only is it quiet, and admission is free, but it is truly interesting and beautiful.
From finding the burial sites of various famous personalities to marveling at the 17th-century mausoleums that resemble the pyramids, the cemetery is one of the best places to explore in the entire city.
Arpad Szenes-Vieira da Silva Museum
Art lovers should not miss the Arpad Szenes-Vieira da Silva Museum, which is dedicated to the works of these two renowned artists. The museum showcases their unique styles and contributions to modern art.
Helena Viera da Silva is a prominent female artist born in the 18th century who boasts the title of the first woman to win the Grand Prix National des Arts in Paris.
Unlike some of the more traditional artists whose works are often displayed in the museums of Portuguese cities, she specialized in abstract works.
They do not seem out of place in the trendy neighborhood and can be a nice break from other galleries.
Tickets can be purchased online or at the door. The standard cost is โฌ7.50, but a Liboa Card will get you a discounted price of โฌ4.00.
Jardim da Estrela and Jardim da Parada
Although Jardim da Estrela technically falls into the Estrela district(another renowned neighborhood), it borders Campo de Ourique, so it might as well be part of the district.
Jardim da Estrela is a beautiful park perfect for a leisurely walk or a picnic. Further from the city center, it’s a peaceful retreat from the city’s hustle and bustle and one of my favorite spots in Lisbon.
Its manicured gardens, quaint ponds, and historical bandstand make it ideal for relaxing and soaking in the serene atmosphere.
The park also hosts various events throughout the year, including open-air concerts and local festivals, making it a lively spot in the heart of the city.
On the other hand, Jardim da Parada, located in the heart of Campo de Ourique, is a smaller but equally charming garden.
This cozy park is a central local hub and offers a more intimate setting for relaxation activities.
The garden is surrounded by cafes and small shops, making it a perfect spot to enjoy a coffee or a pastry while watching the world go by.
Jardim da Parada also features a playground, a kiosk serving refreshments, and plenty of benches for sitting and relaxing.
It’s a wonderful place to experience the local community vibe of the picturesque town, as it’s often filled with families, elderly residents, and young professionals enjoying their day.
If you wander a bit further, you’ll eventually reach the Tagus River, where you can enjoy scenic views and perhaps take a relaxing boat tour.

How to Get to Campo de Ourique
Thanks to Campo de Ourique’s central location in Lisbon, it is relatively easy to get to.
Public Transportation Options
Lisbon’s efficient public transportation network makes reaching the renowned neighborhood of Campo de Ourique easy.
You can take the metro to Rato station and then take a short bus ride or use one of the many trams that pass through the area.
Unfortunately, the metro does not enter Campo de Ourique itself, which you need to consider if you plan on moving to the vibrant city of Lisbon or any of the larger Portuguese cities and may have to commute.
However, this may not be an issue for tourists, as there are other options, such as the trams, which can easily be accessed using your Lisboa card.
It’s important to note that this neighborhood is not hilly at all. There are entire flat sections that are very easy to walk or cycle.
Driving Directions and Parking
If you’re driving, Campo de Ourique is accessible via several main roads. Parking can be challenging, but some public parking lots are available.
You should consider where you will be staying and whether parking is provided; otherwise, it might become burdensome to avoid fees.
However, driving can be a great option to explore the capital city at your own pace and visit its attractions.
Where to Stay in Campo de Ourique
Remember that Campo de Ourique could be quite busy and expensive thanks to its central location and many attractions.
It is very easy to stay slightly outside of it and travel there for a few activities.
If you want the experience of staying there, though, there are some great options. Make sure that you book well in advance to ensure their availability.
