I love to visit Estrela, Lisbon. As someone who has lived in the city for more than a year and regularly goes back for a visit, I can happily say that Estrela is one of the best neighborhoods in the city.
When I lived in Lisbon back in 2018, I lived in Amoreiras. Often in the mornings, I would run to Jardim da Estrela and just feel the morning vibe. It was one of my favorite things; I can really recommend it.
If you are thinking about visiting Lisbon, I would highly recommend exploring Estrela. But what can you do there? Well, from large parks to beautiful museums, there is something for everyone.
Things to do in Estrela
Like many other parts of Lisbon, you could probably spend a good amount of time just walking around Estrela without ever getting bored.
However, if you are looking for something specific to do, you are not short on options.
Visit the Basilica da Estrela
The stunning Basilica da Estrela (sometimes referred to as the Basilica na Estrela in articles translated directly from Portuguese) is a must-visit.
It is an 18th-century basilica that features a magnificent baroque and neoclassical design. But even if you aren’t interested in architecture, I find the church truly beautiful. And there is no entry fee at all!
Once you are done admiring the church itself, you can climb up to the big, white dome for a panoramic view of Lisbon.
Take a Stroll in Jardim da Estrela
One of my favorite spots is Jardim da Estrela (or Jardim de Estrela, as I have seen some people refer to it.)
Early mornings in the Jardim da Estrela park are a magical experience. They’re peaceful and alive with activity—people working out, attending classes, or simply starting their day.
The vibe is incredible, and I love just sitting there and soaking it all in. The park is perfect for a stroll. Enjoy the manicured gardens, duck ponds, and statues.
In the summer, you can expect to find several music festivals, and on the first weekend of every month, there is a quaint market that displays the fantastic community spirit.
It also faces the Basilica, making the journey time between the two non-existent. And it’s quite close to the popular Príncipe Real.
Visit the English Cemetery
After enjoying the serene beauty of Jardim da Estrela, consider taking a short walk to the English Cemetery (Cemitério dos Ingleses).
Established in the early 18th century, this historic cemetery is the final resting place for many British expatriates, including the notable novelist and magistrate Henry Fielding.
The cemetery’s well-maintained pathways and beautifully landscaped gardens offer a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for a contemplative stroll.
As you explore, you’ll encounter various graves and monuments that reflect the unique blend of British and Portuguese cultural influences, showcasing the rich history of the British community in Lisbon.
The charming chapel, an excellent example of early 19th-century architecture, adds to the site’s historical significance.

Enjoy a Walk in the Neighborhood of Lapa
Adjacent to Estrela, Lapa is known for its elegant mansions and embassies. Wander through its quiet streets and enjoy the architecture and ambiance of this upscale neighborhood.
This is one of those places that don’t necessarily have one amazing thing that stands out, but rather, the entire neighborhood is an amazing experience.
Walking up and down the hills, surrounded by pastel-colored mansions and traditional facades, you can see the Tagus River, including the amazing bridge.
If the day is clear, you might even glimpse the Cristo Rei statue.
Stop at the Jardim 9 de Abril
A hidden gem with stunning views over the Tagus River, Jardim 9 de Abril (or Jardim de 9 Abril, depending on who you talk to) is a peaceful spot to take in the scenery and relax.
While it’s not as big as Jardim de Estrela Park, it has appeal. The large Jacaranda trees, with their purple flowers in full bloom, make you feel like you have entered another world.
I could spend hours sitting on one of the many benches, watching the ferries and small boats in the water.
Visit the Museum of Ancient Art
Just like Jardim Da Estrela and the Basilica are next to one another, the Museum of Ancient Art, or Museu Nacional de Art Atiga, is right across the road from the Jardim 9 de Abril.
It is worth a visit. Home to one of Portugal’s most important art collections, the Museum of Ancient Art features various works from the Middle Ages to the early 19th century.
It’s a cultural treasure trove that art lovers will appreciate.
The ticket office is open from 10 AM to 6 PM on Tuesdays through Sundays, and admissions cost €10. However, I highly recommend visiting the website before making sure that it is open.
Entry is free for citizens and official residents of Portugal.
Spend an Afternoon in Tapadas das Necessidades
This large park is a lesser-known spot but offers beautiful gardens, a palace, and serene walking paths. It’s a great place to escape the crowds and enjoy nature.
During the weekends and summers, it can get quite busy, but in off-peak times, it starts to feel like a secret garden, making it a good alternative to some of Estrela’s more popular hot spots.
Have an Ice Cream at Unico Gelato
Unico Gelato serves some of the best gelato in Lisbon. Although many people don’t associate gelato with Portugal, these recipes come straight from Italy, making it quite decadent.
Treat yourself to a scoop (or two) and enjoy it while exploring the neighborhood.
Shopping in Estrela
There aren’t any big shopping centers in Estrela. However, the closest one is the Amoreiras Shopping Center if you need something similar.
Alternatively, you could go to El-Cortes Ingles. These are 10 and 15 minutes away by car, respectively.
Local Markets and Boutiques
Estrela has a variety of local markets and boutiques where you can find unique items. The Mercado de Campo de Ourique is a great place to sample local produce and delicacies.
You can find a little shop on the corner of many streets. I love to wander and discover charming shops and specialty stores. You’ll find everything from artisanal goods to stylish fashion.
Don’t miss the chance to pick up unique souvenirs that capture the essence of the neighborhood, such as handmade crafts, local wines, or traditional Portuguese tiles.
Estrela’s Best Restaurants
Estrela has many excellent restaurants, from those better suited to a late-night, romantic dinner to the perfect spots for a light brunch. There is something for everyone.

This is also a really great option if you are a vegetarian, and although it is still not a cheap restaurant, there are definitely meals that are more affordable.
Tasca da Esquina
Tasca da Esquina serves up traditional Portuguese dishes with a modern twist. The chef’s creativity shines through in every dish, making it a favorite among locals and visitors alike.
You can pick something off the menu, but I recommend the popular Fique Nas Maos Do Chef option. Essentially, this just means that it’s the chef’s choice. Dessert is included in this option.
Flor da Estrela Restaurante
Flor da Estrela offers a mix of traditional and contemporary Portuguese cuisine. The relaxed atmosphere and delicious food make it a great spot for a leisurely meal.
I would highly recommend getting one of their seafood options. Not only are they highly affordable, but there is something special about eating fish so close to the river.
Flor da Estrela is also right next to the Basilica, making it the ideal location for a meal after some sightseeing.
Clube de Jornalistas
Located in a charming building, Clube de Jornalistas offers a unique dining experience. The menu features innovative dishes made with fresh, local ingredients.
It has a very relaxed and cozy atmosphere, the kind of a place you don’t want to visit for a quick bite but rather sit in, savoring your meals, for an hour or two.
Estrela’s Best Coffee Shops
There is something truly special about the coffee shop experience.
I highly recommend popping into any little shop you find, drinking your choice of coffee out on the little tables that litter the cobblestone streets, and enjoying the calm neighborhood.
But even though you can’t go wrong, if you are a true enthusiast, there are a couple of places you should visit.
La Boulangerie
La Boulangerie is a delightful bakery and coffee shop offering fresh pastries and delicious coffee. It’s the perfect spot for breakfast or a midday snack.
The coffee is great, but they are known for their croissants, making it one of many great brunch restaurants.
Copenhagen Coffee Lab and Bakery
This popular chain offers a Scandinavian twist on coffee and baked goods. The minimalist decor and quality offerings make it a favorite among coffee enthusiasts.
Although this definitely isn’t Portuguese, if you want a good cup and the opportunity to buy some beans to take back home and enjoy, this is the place to do it.
How to Get Around
Estrela is rather easy to get around. And you shouldn’t run into any issues traveling between Estrela and some other parts of Lisbon.
Public Transportation Options
Trams and Buses
Estrela is well-served by Lisbon’s iconic trams and extensive bus network. The famous Tram 28 passes through Estrela, offering a scenic ride through some of Lisbon’s most picturesque neighborhoods.
The tram ticket price seems to be around €3 for a one-way ride. You can buy them when you get on. I highly recommend getting the Lisboa card, though.
It makes the process a lot easier and can be used elsewhere.
Buses are frequent and reliable too, making it easy to reach different parts of the city.
A single bus journey in Lisbon, including the charming neighborhood of Estrela, costs €1.85 if you pay directly to the driver. However, for a more budget-friendly option, consider using the Viva Viagem card (now the Navegante card.)
This card offers a discounted fare of €1.47 per journey when you preload it with a “Zapping” balance.
You can easily purchase and top up the Viva Viagem card at various metro stations and ticket kiosks throughout the city.
If you are planning to use public transportation extensively, the Lisboa Card is a fantastic choice. It provides unlimited travel on buses, trams, and the metro, along with free entry to many of Lisbon’s top attractions.
The Lisboa Card starts at €27 for 24 hours, making it a cost-effective way to explore the city.
Metro Stations Nearby
While Estrela doesn’t have a metro station within the neighborhood itself, the Rato and Cais do Sodré stations are within walking distance.
These stations connect you to the rest of Lisbon’s metro network, making it convenient to travel further afield.
Walking and Biking Routes
Estrela is a delight to explore on foot or by bike. The neighborhood’s streets are filled with charming details, from tiled facades to quaint cafes.
Estrela also isn’t as hilly as other neighborhoods in Portugal. Having said that, I would still recommend that you wear sensible shoes.
Lisbon’s bike-sharing program, Gira, has several stations nearby and can be accessed for as little as €2 per day, making it easy to rent a bike for a leisurely ride.
Car Rentals and Parking
If you prefer driving, there are several car rental agencies in Lisbon.
This is especially convenient for long-distance travel since Estrela does not have a metro yet, and catching a bus to a nearby metro can be time-consuming.
Keep in mind that parking in Estrela can be challenging due to narrow streets, but there are parking garages available. Be sure to check parking regulations to avoid fines.
Where to Stay in Estrela
Estrela is a fantastic neighborhood to stay in for your holiday in Lisbon. However, it can be quite expensive. If you are on a budget, consider staying in a cheaper neighborhood and visiting during the day.
If you can afford it, there are definitely some great options, though.

This luxurious hotel offers stunning views, elegant rooms, and top-notch amenities. It’s the perfect place to stay if you’re looking for a bit of indulgence.
Hotel da Estrela

Airbnb and Vacation Rentals
For a more local experience, consider renting an Airbnb or vacation rental. There are plenty of options available, from cozy apartments to spacious homes.
Just ensure you know of any additional fees or costs beforehand.
Budget Accommodations
If you’re traveling on a budget, Estrela has several affordable accommodations. Hostels and budget hotels provide a comfortable stay without breaking the bank.
You could also consider staying outside of Estrela, in one of the cheaper neighborhoods, and traveling there for a day trip.

Whether you’re looking to buy or rent in this chic neighborhood, be prepared for a premium price tag.
If you are looking for an affordable neighborhood, consider Alvalade or Campo de Ourique instead.
Community and Lifestyle
Estrela offers a close-knit community with a laid-back lifestyle. It’s a great place for families and professionals looking for a peaceful yet vibrant environment.
It is also incredibly safe, which means walking around early in the morning or late at night should not be a problem for you at all.
Schools and Education

Just like in the rest of Portugal, public schooling is completely free. However, international schools can come at a relatively steep price.
